A Natural Refuge For Animals and Adventurers

The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge and the Chassahowitzka River which flows into it represent an unspoiled enclave of natural Florida filled with ecological adventure. The Wildlife Refuge itself is over 31,000 acres, which were set aside by the federal government in 1931 to protect the rich waterfowl habitat located here. Eighty years later, it's apparent that this was a big success—over 250 species of birds thrive in the Refuge, alongside endangered West Indian manatees and a host of other flora and fauna.

The best way to get started exploring Chassahowitzka is by boat. The Chassahowitzka River (called "Chass" by the locals) is best for smaller boats; the shallow water makes this a paradise for paddlers. Use our interactive map for custom directions to Chassahowitzka River Campground. This county-owned property boasts the only public ramp along the river, and is the ideal starting point for exploring the river and it's surrounding springs, creeks and water trails. (And it's a great place to stay, too!) Be sure to bring along a GPS unit if you plan on heading far from the main waterway. There are also a number of experienced fishing guides ready to help you discover the area.

With preserving avian diversity the main reason for the founding of the Wildlife Refuge, its little surprise that this is a popular spot for birders. In fact, the Wildlife Refuge is a major spot along the Great Florida Birding Trail, a collection of sites designated for their exceptional birding opportunities. Paddle in, bring your logbook and expect to see some new species.

What's more, an ultralight aircraft from the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership annually leads a group of juvenile whooping cranes over 1,000 miles from Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Central Wisconsin to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife refuge in Citrus County as part of an innovative reintroduction effort. This adds even more ecological diversity to the wildlife refuge.

If you enjoy fishing and hunting, plan to spend some time pursuing these classic outdoor activities amid the beauty of the Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to download the regulations (PDF) from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service before heading out.

However you enjoy Chassahowitzka, you will make memories of Florida preserved at its natural best.
