Overflowing With Family Fun!

Few spots in Florida offer the level outdoor family fun to be found in Citrus County. One hour north of Tampa or northwest of Orlando, Citrus County is home to the charming communities of Crystal River, Homosassa, Inverness and Floral City. Known as The Water Lover's Florida, the area is renowned for natural activities ideal for a fun family getaway.

A great place to begin is with a visit to Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. There, a 1.2-mile-long boardwalk surrounds a natural spring formation and showcases native Florida wildlife—giving your family the unique opportunity to see key deer, red wolves, reptiles, panthers and much more up close. Especially famous are the manatees, which are viewable from an underwater observatory and daily presentations. What's more, the Wildlife Park's Children's Education Center hosts fun, educational Jeopardy-style events about animals on the second Saturday of each month.

Monkey Island in Homosassa is a must see for families. Located in the middle of the Homosassa River this whimsical island is home to monkeys frolicking around a miniature lighthouse and playing in their “monkey condo.” See the island while enjoying fresh-caught seafood at Riverside Crabhouse—a great spot for lunch or dinner. The little ones will also thrill at the beautiful butterflies found nearby at Homosassa Butterfly, a local attraction featuring live butterflies, educational films, exhibits and more. Homosassa Butterfly is open seven days a week.

Next, take a break and relax with the sounds of classic blues. You can introduce your children to the blues at the Nature Coast Friends of the Blues at the Museum Café in Homosassa. The third Saturday of every month features a live blues performance in a comfortable environment for budding music lovers.

Be sure to leave some time in your itinerary to see the area by bike. With the Withlacoochee State Trail, Withlacoochee Bay Trail, the Suncoast Trail and others, there's plenty of terrain to explore. Combine with camping for an adventure your family will never forget.

This is just the beginning of all that Citrus County has to offer. From scalloping and hiking, to fishing, birding and so much more, The Water Lover's Florida overflows with outdoor fun for your family.
