Florida at its Natural Best
One of the Sunshine State’s most beautiful and unspoiled rivers, the Chassahowitzka is the lifeblood of an area bearing its name to the south of Homosassa. The river’s sole public ramp can be found at Chassahowitzka River Campground. This county-owned property is the place to begin for exploring the river and it’s surrounding waterways.
The Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge consists of well over 30,000 acres of protected land. A variety of outdoor activities can be enjoyed here, including hiking, hunting and birding. An ultralight aircraft from the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership annually leads a group of juvenile whooping cranes over 1,000 miles from Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in Central Wisconsin to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife refuge in Citrus County as part of an innovative reintroduction effort. To the east of Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge is the State of Florida’s nearly 34,000-acre Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, another enclave of wildlife protection and outdoor recreation.
