The City of Inverness is the largest municipality in Citrus County and it continues to grow at a managed pace. Inverness proper is slightly more than 7 square miles with population over 7300. Residents take pride in the community and the fact Inverness has served as the County Seat of Government for more then 120 years. Inverness has become the principal hub for special events, culture and activity. Bordered by forests and lakes, natural resources have been protected and managed to provide a wealth of outdoor opportunities for family enjoyment. It is a community with a strong vested interest to respect its history and environment.

The City is made up of many small neighborhoods, each with a distinctive past and flavor. Through the years, it has become a haven for those seeking a relaxing getaway, a friendly community to enjoy retirement, or a simpler and safe lifestyle to raise family. Many may be found enjoying the beautiful water front parks or taking a leisurely stroll through the historic downtown area.

The Withlacoochee Rails to Trails is only a few blocks from the heart of the downtown and it is not surprising the City has become a bicycler’s paradise. Forty six miles of paved recreational trail allows bicyclists and walkers to get their daily dose of activity, while experiencing the natural beauty of areas surrounding the trail. And, for those cyclists who wish to venture off the main trail, they will find easy access to downtown and bike lanes on the main roads to accommodate safe travel. Within the three hundred plus acres of passive and active park facilities, visitors will find miles of walking and jogging trails, a community pool, picnic pavilions, tennis, racquetball, shuffleboard and basketball courts, athletic fields, planned programs and spectacular events.

As Inverness grows, so has the recognition and awards. In June of 2009, the City of Inverness was selected from state wide competition as the Most Patriotic City in Florida by the prestigious Veterans organization, the Forty & Eight. In 2008, the National Arbor Day Foundation and the U.S. Forestry Service designated the City of Inverness as a Tree City for the 14th year in a row. Also in 2008, recognizing the contributions and dedication to the citizens of Citrus County, the Florida Department of Health declared the City of Inverness as a Hidden Hero of Public Health. Last, but certainly not least, the year of 2008 is when Inverness joined seven other Florida communities in being designated a Gateway Community by the Florida Trail Association.

The focus of City Leaders is to promote the historical significance of Inverness, the downtown, the business district, surrounding city and beyond as the vibrant "heart" of Citrus County. The place where residents and visitors can shop, dine, enjoy outstanding cultural, recreational and leisure activities, while interfacing with other local government entities in a well planned community.
