Citrus County’s Untouched Place to Drift and Delight
Variously translated as “land of the hanging pumpkins” and “pumpkin opening place,” the Chassahowitzka River is an unspoiled, mostly undeveloped river that leads directly to the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge. Paddlers enjoy plenty of birding opportunities—bald eagles, herons, egrets and many other species are common sights—as well as nature viewing galore. There are also many chances to paddle up skinny-water trails to indigo-blue bubbling springs. Paddle down this extraordinary river, and you will discover a natural side of Citrus County that is essentially the same today as it was millennia ago.
