In the Heart of Citrus County

Launch Map of the Area
Located between Interstate 75 and the coastal communities of Crystal River and Homosassa, Inverness has grown steadily as an anchor for neighborhoods and developments to serve the many visitors who spend a little time here and then decide to become permanent residents. The city is both the county seat of Citrus County and the largest community in it.
Inverness is within easy reach of a rich and varied collection of recreations. Anglers and hunters enjoy the largemouth bass fishery in the Tsala-Apopka chain of lakes, the upland bird hunting of the East Side and the deer hunting of virtually all wooded areas. Birders and paddlers from all over love the bird watching in a great many designated preserves and canoeing in the lakes and the Withlacoochee River. And everyone looking for a leisurely afternoon can have fun exploring the decorative plant and produce stands that dot the secondary roads throughout the community.
The city was founded in 1889. Local lore attributes the name “Inverness” to a lonely Scotsman pining for his native land. One of the most beautiful reminders of the city’s history is lovingly restored 1912 courthouse—featured in the Elvis Presley film “Follow That Dream”—which today houses the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum. The courthouse is also the centerpiece of historic downtown Inverness and its charming collection of restaurants, antique shops, boutiques, period buildings and parks.
Even though Inverness has all the charm of a quaint small town, just about all the resources of much larger cities are available here. Inverness has a municipal airport capable of handling private jet aircraft, a race track, an excellent library system, high-achievement schools and delightful seasonal festivals.
One of the more unusual festivals celebrates a freshwater turtle that is widely represented all over the county. Featured on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” program, the light-hearted Great American Cooter Festival gives everyone an excuse to get together for competitions, concerts, outdoor eating and a general good time for all.
Similarly, just down a road a few miles, the annual Floral City Strawberry Festival is a huge open air fair.
