Withlacoochee River Paddling Perfect Paddling for All Skill Levels Flowing south to north, the 83-mile Withlacoochee River begins in the Green Swamp and connects with Lake Rousseau in northern Citrus County. It appears dark as a result of the dark river bed, although the waters are very clear. Most of the river travels through the Withlacoochee State Forest. The river’s name comes from the Creek Native American words for “little big water.” We have one put-in spot in Citrus County. Wildlife is abundant on this river, and you may see deer, turkeys, alligators and river otters. The Withlacoochee flows very slowly and makes it a great beginner paddle. Come give it a try—you just might discover a lasting passion for paddling in The Water Lover’s Florida! ![]() 800-587-6667 • VisitCitrus.com |
